SIR Paul McCartney was allegedly targeted by phone hackers during his multi-million pound divorce from Heather Mills, reports claimed.
Members of the former Beatle’s then-PR team believe their mobiles were accessed by the private investigator Glenn Mulcaire, who was working for the News Of The World.
Alan Edwards, founder of PR agency the Outside Organisation, said it was “highly unlikely” his phone was not hacked in 2006.
He is among 4,000 possible victims of hacking by Mulcaire, police suspect.
A national newspaper yesterday reported that Sir Paul’s personal spokesman, Stuart Bell, also may have had his phone hacked.
It said Mr Bell discovered voicemail messages that had been deleted before he had heard them.
It is not thought that Sir Paul was hacked directly because his mobile phone number was known to only a handful of people.
Miss Mills, who was granted a £25m divorce settlement at the High Court in 2006, is also said to have been a victim of hacking.
The model is considering suing the News of the World for breach of privacy over alleged phone hacking, along with her sister Fiona.
It is not clear what stories might have been obtained as a result of hacking.
Just 200 people have so far been informed by Scotland Yard that they were victims of alleged phone hacking.
People whose voicemail messages may have been illegally intercepted include Wayne Rooney, who revealed in April that he may have been a phone hacking target, and Clarence Mitchell, the spokesman for missing Madeleine McCann’s family.
Former Everton striker-turned-football pundit Andy Gray accepted £20,000 in damages in June to settle his claim against the News of the World over alleged hacking.
